A female red squirrel prepares for winter in a forest where food, shelter and survival depend on the changing seasons. She gathers and buries thousands of nuts, builds protected nests and relies on her agility to escape predators such as the goshawk and marten.
Her search for food also plays a role in the life of the forest. Forgotten acorns can germinate into new trees, while mushroom spores dispersed in her droppings contribute to underground networks that provide nutrients to tree roots.
As autumn gives way to winter, food becomes scarce and her reserves attract other animals. After surviving the cold season, spring brings new growth, mating and the return of abundance.
Through the seasons, the red squirrel’s daily struggle is closely connected to the regeneration of the forest around her.
