In the aftermath of China’s Cultural Revolution, a generation of artists, writers, and political activists began challenging restrictions on freedom of expression. The period known as Beijing Spring brought together artistic experimentation and demands for democracy.
In 1978, Beijing’s Democracy Wall became a gathering place for petitioners and activists. Wei Jingsheng called for democracy as the Fifth Modernization, while independent publications such as Today provided a platform for poetry, literature, and art.
Artists including Huang Rui, Ma Desheng, and Wang Keping formed the Stars group. Their unauthorized 1979 exhibition outside the National Art Museum of China was shut down by police, prompting a demonstration demanding artistic freedom and political democracy.
The movement faced renewed repression, arrests, imprisonment, and exile. Through personal testimonies, photographs, and archival recordings, Beijing Spring revisits this period in Chinese history and the continuing importance of artistic freedom and human rights.
