Nazi Propaganda: How Goebbels Sold Hitler’s War

Nazi propaganda used newsreels, radio, photography and film to shape how Germans saw the Second World War. Joseph Goebbels and the Ministry of Propaganda played a central role in shaping how the war was presented to the German public, while the Wehrmacht also operated its own propaganda units.

Propaganda companies supplied footage for newsreels, while military victories were staged and amplified for audiences at home. Erwin Rommel became a media star, and carefully constructed images helped build his reputation as the “Desert Fox.”

As the war turned against Germany, propaganda faced a different challenge. Defeats at Stalingrad, air raids on Berlin and declining morale were concealed, reframed or combined with appeals for “total war.” Radio entertainment and cinema remained important tools until the final months of the Third Reich.

From Goebbels’ propaganda apparatus to the last images of Berlin, discover how media was used to influence public perception throughout the war.
