From Eisenhower’s 1953 “Atoms for Peace” campaign to major programs in Britain, France, Germany and the United States, governments and industry promoted the peaceful atom while questions about safety, cost and public trust steadily grew.
Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima transformed the debate, while anti-nuclear movements, economic pressures and climate change repeatedly reshaped nuclear policy. Through scientists, engineers, campaigners and political leaders, the story traces more than seven decades of nuclear power and the continuing debate over its future.
