For nearly a century, the Empire State Building has been one of New York City’s defining landmarks. Built in just 410 days, the 102-story skyscraper became the world’s tallest building in 1931 and an enduring presence on the Manhattan skyline.
Its story begins with the thousands of workers who built it during the Great Depression and continues through decades of change. Historic photographs by Lewis Hine captured its construction, while its observatories and appearances in films helped establish its place in New York culture.
Today, the Empire State Building combines its original architecture with modern technology. Major upgrades have improved its energy efficiency, while its offices, observatories and lighting system continue to operate at the heart of Midtown Manhattan.
Discover the history, engineering and everyday workings behind one of New York City’s most recognizable skyscrapers.
