A source inside the FBI tells me high-level systems went offline today. Attribution is NOT yet determined. I am NOT confirming the FBI was hacked by ShinyHunters at this time — this is developing Rumor Control.
Let me go ahead and break this down to you — what my source claims, what is publicly confirmed about ShinyHunters this week, and WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU if NICS, CJIS, or background check systems are impacted.
WHAT WE KNOW:
• Source claim (UNVERIFIED): FBI systems offline today, executive level awareness
• Publicly confirmed: ShinyHunters leaked Florida DMV / DAVID data Sept 16 after no ransom paid
• Publicly confirmed: ShinyHunters hijacked rival Clop’s leak site Sept 21
• Publicly confirmed: FBI IC3 warned ABOUT ShinyHunters hitting schools/LMS systems in May — not that FBI was hit
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU:
• If NICS goes down, gun sales STOP nationwide — FFLs can’t transfer
• If CJIS / DAVID-type data is exfiltrated, gun owner names, addresses, VINs are at risk
• I’m working to verify with FFLs on NICS status TODAY. Once I do find out, I will let you guys know.
I’m not exactly sure quite yet what caused the outage, but I started hitting up my sources to figure out what the hell was going on. I don’t want speculation — I want documents, screenshots, and second confirmation.
