Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s defeat at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE led to their final downfall. After Octavian captured Alexandria in 30 BCE, both died, Egypt became a Roman province, and the Ptolemaic dynasty came to an end.
Archaeologists continue to search for Cleopatra’s tomb, using ancient texts, underwater exploration in Alexandria and scientific analysis to examine her final days and possible burial place. The location of the tomb she may have shared with Mark Antony remains unknown.
