From Polavision to TikTok: The Evolution of Instant Video

From Polaroid’s instant photography to TikTok’s short-form videos, the way people create, watch and share images has changed dramatically. Edwin Land’s Polavision tried to bring instant home movies to the public in 1977, while TikTok built a global platform around fast, personalised and shareable video.

Polavision combined recording, developing and projection in one system, but its high cost, silent three-minute cartridges and lack of easy sharing left it behind Betamax and VHS. TikTok took a different path, using machine learning, creator tools, music and the acquisition of Musical.ly to grow rapidly across international markets.

The two stories reveal how timing, technology and user habits can shape the success or failure of instant video. Watch to see how one idea evolved from analogue film into a global digital platform.
