Music has accompanied the Louvre through every stage of its history, from medieval fortress to royal palace, revolutionary museum, and modern centre for the arts.
Built around 1200 by Philippe-Auguste, the Louvre changed with each century: François I, Henri II, Catherine de Médicis, Henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Napoleon, Charles X, Louis Philippe, Napoleon III, and the Republic all left their mark on its spaces. Its galleries, salons, courtyards, and the Tuileries became places of ceremony, performance, power, and artistic creation.
