Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has reportedly carried out a massive review of the private detectives and state officials who allegedly sell information from closed databases. A source familiar with the situation told the news agency Rosbalt that the FSB has conducted more than 60 raids in the investigation.

The same source claims that the FSB has arrested a State Border Service employee in Russia’s Northwestern Federal District and a staff member at a Federal Tax Service branch. “The first [suspect] supposedly sold information about foreign travel by [Alexander] Petrov, [Ruslan] Boshirov, and several others,” the source told Rosbalt, clarifying that the arrests, however, are tied to leaking information about other persons, not the “Salisbury tourists.”

The British authorities identified Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov as the men likely responsible for poisoning double agent Sergey Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England, this March. Investigative reporters at Bellingcat and The Insider used extracts from different closed databases to compile evidence that these two suspects are actually two Russian military intelligence agents named Alexander Mishkin and Anatoly Chepiga.

Hurricane Michael unearths Florida shipwreck from 1899: report

mikenova shared this story from Upstate NY Trending News.

Ships that washed ashore on an island near Florida’s Panhandle during the 1899 Carrabelle hurricane were completely exposed by Hurricane Michael last week, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Several 19th century ships were discovered in the wake of Michael on the west coast of Dog Island in the Gulf of Mexico.

Fifteen ships made land during the storm 119 year ago. It’s unclear which of them were unearthed by Michael, the Democrat reported.

The Florida Department of State says the shipwreck is well-documented. But due to state resources being directed toward more urgent recovery efforts, there are no immediate plans for state archaeologists to visit the site.

Atlanta-area police officer shot and killed during suspicious vehicle check

mikenova shared this story from FOX40.

A police officer in Gwinnett County, Georgia, was shot and killed while answering a call about a suspicious vehicle on Saturday afternoon, according to a department spokesman.

Officer Antwan Toney, who had just turned 30, was responding with another officer to a call of possible marijuana use, said Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

“There was no particular red flags in this call,” Smith said.

Toney was shot at from inside the suspect vehicle as soon as he approached the car in a parking lot at a middle school. He was hit one time. The other officer, returned fire and dragged Toney away, Smith said, and he died at a hospital.

The suspect’s four-door black sedan sped away and crashed about a mile away. There were as many as four people inside the car, Smith said. There are no suspects in custody.

“They fled the scene and crashed without an officer in hot pursuit,” Smith said.

Smith said it is unclear whether anyone in the suspect’s car was hit or how many shots were fired.

Chief of Police Butch Ayers said investigators were talking to multiple “persons of interest.”

“We have interviewed a few people about their involvement in this case. As of now, no one has been formally charged with any crimes,” the department said in a news release.

Detectives were still processing evidence from the car and had engaged in some searches elsewhere, Smith said. Police are also looking at body camera video recorded by responding officers.

It is unclear whether there was police dash camera video of the event.

Police presence was heavy Saturday evening in neighborhoods a few miles east of Stone Mountain. A helicopter flew above the vicinity of the middle school.

Toney had been with the department for almost three years. Before he was an officer, he had been a security guard, police said.

Ayers said his Gwinett colleagues “recall a very jovial person who was dedicated to his job and dedicated to his community.”

Toney was originally from Southern California.

Gwinnett County is in the metropolitan Atlanta area and has 920,000 residents. Toney’s killing is the first line-of-duty death in the county since May 1993 when an officer was killed in a traffic accident.

Three officers were shot to death in April 1964.

Toney’s death was the second fatal shooting of a law enforcement officer this week. North Carolina State Trooper Kevin K. Conner was killed Wednesday during a traffic stop near the border with South Carolina. A suspect was taken into custody.

Russian officials celebrate 60th anti-Russian sanction, warn not to play with fire – Sanctions against Russia

mikenova shared this story from PravdaReport.

Russian officials celebrate 60th anti-Russian sanction

Spokespeople for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation commented on the expansion of US sanctions against Russia because of the alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election. According to Russian officials, there is already a round number of anti-Russian restrictions.

“We continue watching the United States practicing sanctions against our country. It appears that it has turned into some kind of national fun there, because yesterday’s anti-Russian measures have become the 60th since 2011,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

Ryabkov noted that Washington continues to introduce new sanctions because old ones bring no results.

“We can also see the excitement that has engulfed American politicians, many of whom, being prisoners to their beliefs of their own “exceptionalism,” hope that they need to take a little bit more effort before they can start dictating their conditions to Russia,” Ryabkov said.

“No one will succeed in this ever,” the official continued. “Washington operators of the sanctions machine ought to get acquainted with the history of Russia, to stop the unnecessary fussing,” he added. He also noted that the Americans “thoughtlessly rock global stability by escalating tensions in the Russian-American relations.”

“It’s stupid to play with fire, because it can become dangerous,” the deputy head of the department said.

On September 29, Washington announced the imposition of sanctions on 27 physical and six legal entities from Russia, whom the US administration links with intelligence services and defense institutions. The sanctions were introduced as a response to Russia’s alleged interference in the election of the American president in 2016.

In particular, the United States imposed sanctions on PMC Wagner, the St. Petersburg Agency for Internet Research (known as the “troll factory”), Evgeny Prigozhin’s companies Concord Management and Consulting and Concord Catering. Prigozhin himself, who is dubbed as “Putin’s chef,” also appears on the sanctions list.

The list also includes alleged employees of the “troll factory” and employees of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation accused of interfering in the 2017 presidential vote in the US: First Deputy Head of the GRU Vladimir Alekseev, Deputy Chief of the GRU Sergei Gizunov, GRU supervisor Igor Korobov, Deputy Chief of the GRU Igor Kostyukov.

The list of sanctioned companies includes Defense Ministry’s logistics company Oboronlogistics, an aviation plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, MiG aircraft-building corporation and Tupolev aviation design bureau.

1. Trump from mikenova (198 sites): Palmer Report: Robert Mueller fires Trump-Russia warning shot ahead of his big move against Donald Trump

Earlier this week it was widely reported that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is planning to make his big move against Donald Trump shortly after the midterm elections. Now Mueller is indirectly taking a Trump-Russia warning shot with a new indictment which, while not officially coming from his office, unmistakably has his fingerprints all over it – and the timing is not a coincidence.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has indicted Russian operative Elena Khusyaynova. She’s part of Project Lakhta, which is backed by Russian oligarch Yevgeniy Prigozhin, meaning that you can draw a direct line from Khusyaynova to Vladimir Putin. Just as importantly, you can draw a direct line from Khusyaynova to Prigozhin’s company Concord Management, which was indicted by Robert Mueller earlier this year. In other words, this new indictment is clearly a part of Mueller’s Trump-Russia strategy, even if he has technically handed it off to EDVA. But the real upshot here is what she’s been charged with.

Elena Khusyaynova stands accused of having used social media to try to meddle in the 2018 U.S. election. That’s right, the one that’s about to take place in a few weeks. She’s not currently in the United States, so she hasn’t been arrested, and it’s not clear if she’ll ever stand trial. But the indictment alone will prevent her from ever being able to set foot in a nation that has an extradition treaty with the U.S., and so on. This kind of thing is a serious blow to a person whether they end up behind bars or not.

Robert Mueller and his allies are busting Khusyaynova for her low-level attempt at illegally meddling in the 2018 election, which probably wouldn’t have done anything to change the outcome anyway, as a warning shot to the Russian government that it had better not try anything serious in November. Once we’re past the elections and we see whether the Democrats have taken control of the House, Mueller will then know whether his best path is to hand off his findings for impeachment proceedings, or to try to indict Donald Trump directly.

Opinion | The Orthodox Schism and the Spiritual Limits of Politics

mikenova shared this story .

As in most schisms in Christianity’s history, this one is determined as much by realpolitik and national interests as by dogma. Canonical issues can determine political behavior, while politics often dictate church developments. The Ecumenical Patriarchate is asserting its ancient right to grant autonomy to churches and to judge issues of church law. Constantinople was established by the Emperor Constantine in 330 and, as the “New Rome,” it came just after Rome in seniority. The schism in 1054 left Constantinople the primary church in the East. It is these rights of primacy that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is determined to defend, despite its very reduced circumstances following the city’s fall to the Ottomans and the withering of its own flock in Turkey.

Russia wants to project its leadership of the Orthodox world as the “Third Rome,” a role it took upon itself after breaking away from Constantinople in 1448, when its leadership disagreed with efforts to unite East and West Christendom. After 1453, many Orthodox, including the Greeks, looked to Russia for salvation from the Turks.

But today Ukraine is forging a separate identity after centuries of Russian domination, strengthening ties with the European Union and the United States. Ukraine’s president, Petro Poroshenko, greeted the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s announcement of its decision on Oct. 11 with fighting words.

“This is the collapse of Moscow’s centuries-old claims for global domination as the Third Rome,” he said. “The independence of our church is part of our pro-European and pro-Ukrainian policies that we have been consistently pursuing.”

On Oct. 12, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, charged that the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s decision was a “provocation” backed by the United States. On the same day, Mr. Putin discussed the issue at his Security Council. Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Church of Russia, is a close ally of Mr. Putin’s and has taken a hard line on Ukraine for years. On Monday, the governing body of the Russian Church, the Holy Synod, decided to break off relations with Constantinople.

Metropolitan Hilarion, head of the Russian church’s external relations, stressed that Moscow would not abide by any decisions taken by the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding the Ukrainian Church. “All these decisions are unlawful and canonically void,” he said. “The Russian Orthodox Church does not recognize these decisions and will not follow them.” He called on the Ecumenical Patriarchate to change its decision.

This is unlikely, as Bartholomew has long seen the Russian church as trying to undermine his authority. Patriarch Kirill stayed away from a Holy and Great Council hosted by Bartholomew on Crete in 2016, a meeting of all Orthodox church leaders aimed at promoting unity, which had been 55 years in the making. The patriarchs of Bulgaria, Georgia and Antioch also did not attend.

Flash – US urges respect for independent Ukraine church
Sat, 20 Oct 2018 12:55:04 -0400

mikenova shared this story from France 24 – Live news.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -The United States called Friday on all sides to respect the new independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, wading into a religious feud that has enraged Russia.

The leading authority in Orthodox Christianity, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, last week granted the right of autonomy to the Ukrainian church, which for more than 300 years has been under Moscow’s control.

“The United States reiterates its strong support for religious freedom and the freedom of members of religious groups, including Ukraine’s Orthodox community, to govern their religion according to their beliefs, free of outside interference,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

“We support Ukrainians’ ability to worship as they choose and hope this will be respected by all.

“Tolerance, restraint and understanding are key to ensuring that people with different religious affiliations can live and prosper together in peace,” he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier accused the United States of supporting the “provocation” led by the church’s first among equals, Istanbul-based Patriarch Bartholomew I.

The decision by the Ecumenical Patriarchate will likely reduce Russian influence in Ukraine, where Moscow has backed separatists in the country’s east and annexed Crimea in 2014.

The Russian church, whose Patriarch Kirill is a strong backer of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has broken ties with the leading Orthodox authority over the decision, which it refuses to recognize.

Ukrainian leaders have been campaigning for independence for their church, but Russian church backers have described the move as a schism as significant as the 1054 split between Eastern and Western Christianity.

Бочку катить – Крылатые выражения, афоризмы – Отрезал.РУ
Sat, 20 Oct 2018 09:23:46 -0400

mikenova shared this story from

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The United States is fabricating a pretext to use sanctions against Russia once again, Russia’s foreign ministry said on Saturday, responding to Washington’s charges against a Russian accused of conspiring to interfere in U.S. elections.

The U.S. government on Friday charged Russian national Elena Khusyaynova with playing a key financial role in a Kremlin-backed plan to conduct “information warfare” against the United States, including ongoing attempts to influence next month’s congressional elections.

20 Oligarch Yachts Cost More than All Russian Navy Ships Built in Last Decade, Military Journal Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 19 – For geographic and historical reasons, the Russian navy has never been the priority that its army has; but Voyennoye obozreniye underlines this, noting that just 20 of the yachts owned by Russian oligarchs cost more than all the ships Moscow has built for the Russian navy over the last ten years.

The article which draws on Western and Russian sources to paint a picture of these expensive playthings of the country’s super rich is significant in at least three ways: First, it highlights the way in which Putin for all his bluster about national defense has deferred to the oligarchs rather than focused on building the Russian navy.

Second, it underscores for a Russian audience just how great income inequality in that country is and how it is affecting not only the private sphere but the public sphere as well. And third, and most important, it suggests, given its source, that there is mounting anger among the Russian military at this situation, a fault line in the Russian elite that is likely to widen.
