M.N.: This claim is surprising indeed. It needs proofs and elaboration, if they exist. If there is a truth in it it needs further investigations. This claim is too serious to be taken lightly.

7:08 AM 11/1/2018 – Long Post: “Meadows: Investigate FBI for being ‘weaponized’ by Obama”. | M.N.: Investigate FBI for being “Obamized” by Obama, in all respects.

This is the big, absolutely unexplored and unaddressed, and quite painful subject. It must be investigated, in all the possible respects and implications also, and this phenomenon (non-doubtful?) has to be studied.

There is no need for the “Obama’s FBI” or “Trump’s FBI”. There is a tremendous need for the US Domestic Intelligence Service, be it the FBI or any other (competition is the engine of perfection), which is healthy and well functioning. It does not appear that presently the current FBI fits these criteria.

“Authorities were also aided by mistakes made by the alleged bomber who left traces of evidence investigators scrambled to understand.”

M.N.: The same “Signature Ham-handedness”, “amateurishness”, as in many other recent “Performance Crimes”, as if it were the invitation to be discovered. And the purpose is to reveal the message so evidently contained, with very little coding, in suspects’ name: Cesar Sayoc. The meaning of this message, if it is so, is the subject to interpretations.

Most likely, Cesar Sayoc was just a tool and the “unwitting messenger”.

Continue this investigation.

Look for the ultimate mastermind and the organizer of these mailings.

This crime, stylistically, looks very much like the many previous ones and it does fit the pattern which has to be identified, described, studied, and to be dealt with.

Opinion | The Orthodox Schism and the Spiritual Limits of Politics

mikenova shared this story .

As in most schisms in Christianity’s history, this one is determined as much by realpolitik and national interests as by dogma. Canonical issues can determine political behavior, while politics often dictate church developments. The Ecumenical Patriarchate is asserting its ancient right to grant autonomy to churches and to judge issues of church law. Constantinople was established by the Emperor Constantine in 330 and, as the “New Rome,” it came just after Rome in seniority. The schism in 1054 left Constantinople the primary church in the East. It is these rights of primacy that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is determined to defend, despite its very reduced circumstances following the city’s fall to the Ottomans and the withering of its own flock in Turkey.

Russia wants to project its leadership of the Orthodox world as the “Third Rome,” a role it took upon itself after breaking away from Constantinople in 1448, when its leadership disagreed with efforts to unite East and West Christendom. After 1453, many Orthodox, including the Greeks, looked to Russia for salvation from the Turks.

But today Ukraine is forging a separate identity after centuries of Russian domination, strengthening ties with the European Union and the United States. Ukraine’s president, Petro Poroshenko, greeted the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s announcement of its decision on Oct. 11 with fighting words.

“This is the collapse of Moscow’s centuries-old claims for global domination as the Third Rome,” he said. “The independence of our church is part of our pro-European and pro-Ukrainian policies that we have been consistently pursuing.”

On Oct. 12, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, charged that the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s decision was a “provocation” backed by the United States. On the same day, Mr. Putin discussed the issue at his Security Council. Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Church of Russia, is a close ally of Mr. Putin’s and has taken a hard line on Ukraine for years. On Monday, the governing body of the Russian Church, the Holy Synod, decided to break off relations with Constantinople.

Metropolitan Hilarion, head of the Russian church’s external relations, stressed that Moscow would not abide by any decisions taken by the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding the Ukrainian Church. “All these decisions are unlawful and canonically void,” he said. “The Russian Orthodox Church does not recognize these decisions and will not follow them.” He called on the Ecumenical Patriarchate to change its decision.

This is unlikely, as Bartholomew has long seen the Russian church as trying to undermine his authority. Patriarch Kirill stayed away from a Holy and Great Council hosted by Bartholomew on Crete in 2016, a meeting of all Orthodox church leaders aimed at promoting unity, which had been 55 years in the making. The patriarchs of Bulgaria, Georgia and Antioch also did not attend.

Flash – US urges respect for independent Ukraine church
Sat, 20 Oct 2018 12:55:04 -0400

mikenova shared this story from France 24 – Live news.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -The United States called Friday on all sides to respect the new independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, wading into a religious feud that has enraged Russia.

The leading authority in Orthodox Christianity, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, last week granted the right of autonomy to the Ukrainian church, which for more than 300 years has been under Moscow’s control.

“The United States reiterates its strong support for religious freedom and the freedom of members of religious groups, including Ukraine’s Orthodox community, to govern their religion according to their beliefs, free of outside interference,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

“We support Ukrainians’ ability to worship as they choose and hope this will be respected by all.

“Tolerance, restraint and understanding are key to ensuring that people with different religious affiliations can live and prosper together in peace,” he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier accused the United States of supporting the “provocation” led by the church’s first among equals, Istanbul-based Patriarch Bartholomew I.

The decision by the Ecumenical Patriarchate will likely reduce Russian influence in Ukraine, where Moscow has backed separatists in the country’s east and annexed Crimea in 2014.

The Russian church, whose Patriarch Kirill is a strong backer of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has broken ties with the leading Orthodox authority over the decision, which it refuses to recognize.

Ukrainian leaders have been campaigning for independence for their church, but Russian church backers have described the move as a schism as significant as the 1054 split between Eastern and Western Christianity.

Sat, 20 Oct 2018 09:23:46 -0400

mikenova shared this story from

Russia’s foreign ministry says USA is fabricating pretext to use sanctions against Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The United States is fabricating a pretext to use sanctions against Russia once again, Russia’s foreign ministry said on Saturday, responding to Washington’s charges against a Russian accused of conspiring to interfere in U.S. elections.

The U.S. government on Friday charged Russian national Elena Khusyaynova with playing a key financial role in a Kremlin-backed plan to conduct “information warfare” against the United States, including ongoing attempts to influence next month’s congressional elections.

20 Oligarch Yachts Cost More than All Russian Navy Ships Built in Last Decade, Military Journal Says
Sat, 20 Oct 2018 07:19:42 -0400

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 19 – For geographic and historical reasons, the Russian navy has never been the priority that its army has; but Voyennoye obozreniye underlines this, noting that just 20 of the yachts owned by Russian oligarchs cost more than all the ships Moscow has built for the Russian navy over the last ten years.

The article which draws on Western and Russian sources to paint a picture of these expensive playthings of the country’s super rich is significant in at least three ways: First, it highlights the way in which Putin for all his bluster about national defense has deferred to the oligarchs rather than focused on building the Russian navy.

Second, it underscores for a Russian audience just how great income inequality in that country is and how it is affecting not only the private sphere but the public sphere as well. And third, and most important, it suggests, given its source, that there is mounting anger among the Russian military at this situation, a fault line in the Russian elite that is likely to widen.

Crime and Criminology from mikenova (8 sites): InSight Crime: Continued Obstacles Threaten Future of FARC Peace Process in Colombia

Continued Obstacles Threaten Future of FARC Peace Process in Colombia

A transitional justice system formed after the signing of a historic peace agreement with Colombia’s FARC rebels to try former fighters for crimes committed during the country’s decades-long armed conflict continues to face obstacles, further threatening the possibility of achieving lasting peace in the country.

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz – JEP) was set up after the Colombian government and the now largely demobilized Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia – FARC) signed a peace agreement in 2016.

SEE ALSO: Coverage of FARC Peace

The purpose of the JEP is to “administer transitional justice and make known the crimes committed in the framework of the armed conflict before December 1, 2016,” according to the institution.

Below, InSight Crime looks at three obstacles that are hindering the JEP’s ability to move the peace process forward.

1. Former FARC Fighters Continue to Commit Crimes

Under the peace agreement, only former FARC fighters who did not commit crimes after 2016 can benefit from the JEP. However, since it was established, there have been reports of high profile former guerrilla members being included in the special jurisdiction’s list.

The most emblematic case is that of Seuxis Paucis Hernández Solarte, alias “Jesús Santrich,” who was a lead negotiator in the peace talks and was set to assume a seat in congress in April 2018.

Colombian authorities arrested Santrich in early April 2018 after the United States charged him with drug trafficking crimes committed after the 2016 peace agreement, making him ineligible to face justice through the JEP.

More recently, US authorities sanctioned another former FARC fighter for his alleged ties to the drug trade following the peace agreement.

On October 18, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announcedsanctions against former FARC rebel Pedro Luis Zuleta Noscué, alias “El Inválido.” The agency alleges that Zuleta Noscué “continues to supply narcotics to criminal groups such as Colombia’s Oficina de Envigado.”

US authorities allege that Zuleta Noscué has long controlled a drug trafficking corridor in southwest Cauca department where he supported the FARC’s drug trafficking activities. Cauca had the fourth-highest number of hectares used for coca cultivation in 2017, according to illicit crop monitoring datapublished in September of this year by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

2. ELN Guerrillas on List of Demobilized FARC Fighters

Authorities in Colombia have in the past faced difficulties separating demobilizing FARC guerrillas with drug traffickers and other criminals trying to pass themselves off as FARC fighters in an effort to take advantage of the benefits awarded to the demobilized guerrillas as part of the peace agreement.

These problems persist today. JEP President Patricia Linares recently admitted that there are members of Colombia’s National Liberation Army (Ejército de Liberación Nacional – ELN) on the list of demobilized former FARC fighters, El Tiempo reported.

“I have information, which I myself have verified, that some of these people [ELN fighters] make up part of the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace’s lists that were prepared by the previous administration,” Linares said.

3. Tension with Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office

A new legislative proposal in Colombia has generated concerns from the JEP about their ability to adequately do their job. The proposal would limit the JEP’s access to confidential information, such as military, state, intelligence and counterintelligence operations that threaten to put the country’s national security at risk, Noticias Caracol reported.

JEP President Linares said that the legislation is “openly unconstitutional because it affects the [JEP’s] assigned transnational function.”

SEE ALSO: Colombia News and Profiles

The Attorney General’s Office and the JEP have also clashed over cases that don’t threaten national security, but rather raise questions about which institution has the authority and whether ordinary justice or transnational justice is the proper route to take. The Attorney General’s Office, for example, recently refused to hand over to the JEP information pertaining to assets seized from the FARC that could be used as part of reparations for victims of the armed conflict.

That said, relations between the two institutions appear to be improving. JEP President Linares recently met with Deputy Attorney General María Paulina Riveros. The two agreed to create a roundtable of sorts where the two entities can discuss solutions to the many issues that have stoked tensions between them, El Tiempo reported.

“The Government, Congress and Judicial Power are now paddling for the same side,” Colombia Attorney General Néstor Humberto Martínez Neira said.

String of own goals by Russian spies exposes a strange sloppiness | World news

It must go down as one of the most embarrassing months ever for Russia’s military intelligence.

In the 30 days since Theresa May revealed the cover identities of the Salisbury poison suspects, the secretive GRU (now GU) has been publicly exposed by rival intelligence agencies and online sleuths, with an assist from Russia’s own president.

Despite attempts to stonewall public inquiry, the GRU’s dissection has been clinical. The agency has always had a reputation for daring, bolstered by its affiliation with special forces commando units and agents who have seen live combat.

But in dispatching agents to the Netherlands who could, just using Google, be easily exposed as graduates of an elite GRU academy, the agency appears reckless and absurdly sloppy.

One of the suspected agents, tipped as a “human intelligence source” by Dutch investigators, had registered five vehicles at a north-western Moscow address better known as the Aquarium, the GRU finishing school for military attaches and elite spies. According to online listings, which are not official but are publicly available to anyone on Google, he drove a Honda Civic, then moved on to an Alfa Romeo. In case the address did not tip investigators off, he also listed the base number of the Military-Diplomatic Academy.

That was the same school where Anatoliy Chepiga, the alleged true identity of the Russian suspect in the Salisbury poisoning, finished his education. Viktor Suvorov, a GRU agent who later defected to the west, described the academy as so secret that Soviet citizens could be jailed just for revealing its existence.

The internet has now made it far harder to hide that evidence. But the GRU apparently thought that would not matter.

Meanwhile, most of the alleged agents could be found online.

One of the men, Aleksei Morenets, an alleged hacker, appeared to have set up a dating profile.

Another played for an amateur Moscow football team “known as the security services team” a current player told the Moscow Times. “Almost everyone works for an intelligence agency.” The team rosters are publicly available.

Russia has claimed that the investigations are fake and that researchers are in league with western intelligence. But most of the evidence to uncover the spies was already out there, and conveniently timestamped on social media.

The saga began after May’s announcement last month, when Vladimir Putin ordered the two Salisbury suspects to appear on television. There, the two men fumbled through an awkward story about visiting Salisbury twice to see the cathedral, while an editor for state television suggested that they were gay. Homosexuality is largely treated as taboo in Russia and the government passed a law banning “gay propaganda” in 2013.

It didn’t help. One of the two men was outed as a likely GRU colonel anyway, after online investigators dug up photographs from his military service and leaked passport records.

Along the way, the researchers from Bellingcat and the Insider also recognised that the men were issued sequentially numbered passports by a special division, making it easier for anyone with access to a leaked database to identify them.

And then came Thursday’s bombshell: four men outed by Dutch investigators for attempting to hack into the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (as well as Malaysia’s investigation into a downed jetliner).

The alleged spies were caught carrying enough telephones to fill an electronics store. Moreover, like all meticulous Russians on a business trip, they held on to their taxi receipts from GRU headquarters.

Russia will publicly deny the latest reports and revelations about the alleged GRU agents. It has no other alternative. But the exposure of several consecutive European operations should raise questions about whether Russian military intelligence is being intentionally provocative or has simply gone off the rails.

Putin compares Khashoggi case to Skripal poisoning, asks why Russia condemned despite lack of proof — RT World News

mikenova shared this story from RT – Daily news.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has contrasted the world’s response to the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi with its response to the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal, citing lack of proof in both cases.

Speaking at the annual Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin said that despite a lack of evidence proving Russian involvement in the poisoning of Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March, punitive actions were immediately taken against Moscow. In contrast, he said, that did not happen with Riyadh following Khashoggi’s disappearance.

“There’s no proof in regards to Russia, but steps are taken. Here, people say that a murder happened in Istanbul, but no steps are taken. People need to figure out a single approach to these kinds of problems,” Putin said.

Khashoggi, a journalist who wrote columns that were critical of the Saudi kingdom for the Washington Post, disappeared on October 2 when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents for his planned marriage to a Turkish citizen.

Despite Turkish authorities pinning the blame for Khashoggi’s alleged murder on Riyadh – claiming to have video and audio proof to back it up – the US has been reluctant to point the finger at the Saudis. US President Donald Trump even floated the theory that perhaps “rogue killers” were responsible for the journalist’s disappearance. No such alternative explanations were offered following the Skripals’ poisoning.

Asked whether Moscow would respond to the Khashoggi disappearance, Putin said Russia still did not have enough details to take any action. “Why do we need to take some steps towards the deterioration of our relations if we don’t understand what is happening? But if someone understands and someone believes that the murder occurred, then I hope that some evidence will be provided,” he said.

Trump has been accused by numerous analysts, journalists and politicians of advocating for Riyadh in order to protect the US’ financially beneficial relationship with the Gulf nation. Many have cited Trump’s business ties with Saudis dating back decades.

On the day that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Riyadh to discuss the Khashoggi case, $100 million was transferred to the State Department by Saudi Arabia – part of a long-planned contribution to help stabilize newly liberated regions of Syria. The US, however, denied that the timing of the transfer had anything to do with the diplomatic incident over Khashoggi’s disappearance.

Turkish sources have leaked information to the press, including details from an alleged recording made of Khashoggi’s murder, during which Saudi forensics expert Saleh al-Tubaiqi allegedly dismemberedthe journalist’s body while his colleagues listened to music.

Saudi Arabia has denied claims of involvement. Trump has cast doubt over the existence of the tape, and said he plans to have a discussion with Pompeo following his fact-finding trip to Riyadh and Istanbul earlier this week.

When the Skripals were poisoned in the English town of Salisbury in March, British intelligence agencies swiftly accused the Kremlin of being responsible and sanctions were slapped on Moscow. British Prime Minister Theresa May led a chorus of international condemnation, expelling 23 Russian diplomats from the country and convincing the US and a slew of European countries to follow suit.

Novichok poisonings: what is the GRU and how does it operate? | World news

mikenova shared this story from The Guardian.

Theresa May’s statement saying the UK believes the Russian military intelligence service was behind the Salisbury novichok poisoning shines a further unwelcome spotlight on the most secretive of all the country’s intelligence agencies.

A slow drip of information about operations by the Russian service, known as the GRU, in recent years – from hacking ahead of the US election to support for the Kremlin’s wars in Ukraine and Syria – has shown the wide reach of the agency.

The intelligence wing of the Russian military was renamed the GU in 2010, but both inside and outside the country it is still more commonly known by its old name, the GRU.

The agency, where Sergei Skripal, who was poisoned by the nerve agent novichok, used to work, performs traditional military intelligence tasks and foreign intelligence operations.

For decades Soviet military intelligence kept up a parallel global network of agents and deep-cover “illegals” operating overseas with that run by the KGB. The most famous of the agents was Richard Sorge, who posed as a Nazi journalist in Japan in the 1930s and sent valuable intelligence to Moscow, including details of Adolf Hitler’s plans to attack the Soviet Union, which were ignored by Joseph Stalin.

When the Soviet Union collapsed and the KGB’s foreign spying operations were shifted to a new network, the SVR, the GRU retained a separate status. Although the SVR and GRU often have overlapping interests they tend to work in competition, with separate “residencies” inside Russian foreign missions abroad.

Sergei Tretyakov, who was a high-ranking officer in the SVR’s New York residency until he defected in 2000, explained in a book that there was no overlap between the work of the two agencies. There were two unmarked steel doors on the eighth floor of Russia’s UN mission in New York, said Tretyakov, one of which led to the SVR and one to the GRU. Neither agency had access to the office of the other. The head of the GRU reports to the defence minister and to Vladimir Putin, the Russian president.

The GRU has been identified as the main culprit in hacking ahead of the 2016 US election. A recent indictment from the team of special investigator Robert Mueller named 12 apparent GRU officers over the alleged hacking and leaking of Democratic party emails. Like the US operation, the novichok poisoning fits an apparent pattern of GRU operations: ingenious and audacious, yet uncovered and publicised by the target countries.

The open source investigative team Bellingcat recently claimed it had identified a GRU officer named Oleg Ivannikov as being partly responsible for the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014. The officer had also, allegedly, operated under a pseudonym as the defence minister of the Kremlin-backed breakaway state of South Ossetia. Again, it was an operation that mixed impressive tradecraft with errors: among the clues to the man’s identity was a record of an online shopping delivery where he had given his address as GRU headquarters.

A new twist has emerged in the attempted poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. Czech Radio has reported that the two suspects, believed to be Russian military intelligence officers, were in the Czech Republic in October 2014, the same time that Skripal was allegedly briefing Czech intelligence on Russian spying activity.

The Latest: Britain says Russia has 24 theories on poisoning

– Associated Press – Thursday, April 5, 2018

MOSCOW (AP) – The Latest on the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy and his daughter (all times local):

12:00 a.m.

Britain’s U.N. ambassador says Russia has come up with 24 theories on who bears responsibility for the poisoning of an ex-spy and his daughter in England, but the United Kingdom has only one – that it’s highly likely Russia was responsible.

Karen Pierce told a U.N. Security Council meeting called by Russia on Thursday: “We believe that the U.K.’s actions stand up to any scrutiny. … We have nothing to hide, but I do fear that Russia might have something to fear.”

Pierce strongly criticized Russia for insisting on having its own experts participate in the examination of the nerve agent used in the attack on Sergei and Yulia Skripal. Samples of what is believed to have sickened them are being analyzed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Pierce also told reporters later that she finds it “grotesque” that Russia is blocking the investigation into responsibility for chemical weapons use in Syria while demanding that it be part of the investigation into the March 4 poisonings of the Skripals in the city of Salisbury.

___

11:25 p.m.

Russia’s U.N. ambassador says Moscow assumes “with a high degree of probability” that the intelligence services of other countries are behind the likely the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain.

Vassily Nebenzia told the U.N. Security Council at a Thursday meeting called by Russia that “everything confirms this is a coordinated, very well-planned campaign” intended “to discredit and even delegitimize Russia.”

He did not name the intelligence services that Russia suspects, but said their goal is to accuse Moscow of using “a horrible, inhumane weapon, of concealing the arsenal of this substance,” of violating the Chemical Weapons Convention, and putting in question Russia’s “role not only in finding a solution in Syria, but anywhere else.”

Nebenzia said Britain is required to allow Russia to participate in the investigation of the March 4 attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.

He also questioned the British government’s claims of Russian responsibility by asking what antidotes for exposure to the Novichok nerve agent the Skripals were given and where they were for four hours without cellphones on the day of the attack.

11:00 p.m.

Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations has given a blistering indictment of the British government’s allegations that Moscow was behind the nerve-agent poisoning in England of an ex-spy and his daughter.

U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia opened a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Thursday with a lengthy statement in which he claimed that Russia was the victim of a hasty, sloppy and ill-intentioned defamation campaign by Britain and its allies.

Nebenzia said: “Great Britain refuses to cooperate with us on the pretext that the victim does not cooperate with the criminal….A crime was committed on British territory, possibly a terrorist act, and it is our citizens who are the victims.”

Russia called the Security Council session at U.N. headquarters in New York to appeal to other nations for support in pursuing another explanation for the March 4 attack on Sergei Skripal, a former Russian military intelligence agent who was convicted of spying for Britain.

Nebenzia challenged Britain to take his statement as “a litmus test” of the country’s integrity and respect for international norms.

9:15 p.m.

Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations says she fears Russia called a meeting of the U.N. Security Council to discuss the poisoning of an ex-spy in England to show “contempt” for international institutions such as the U.N.

Ambassador Karen Pierce said she also has “a bit of a fear” that Moscow is trying “to build a narrative” for why it won’t accept the forthcoming findings from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on the nerve agent that sickened Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

Piece told reporters ahead of Thursday afternoon’s Security Council meeting that Britain looks forward to the chemical weapons watchdog’s report and has “nothing to hide.”

She said: “We ask, what have the Russians got to fear?”

Pierce said a number of factors led the British government to conclude that “this was a Russian state attack.” She says they include a Russian declaration that its ex-agents are fair game, knowledge that Russia has made military-grade nerve agents and “other information that I am not able to disclose.”

___

7:50 p.m.

Russia’s Ambassador to Britain, Alexander Yakovenko, has rejected the notion that the embassy is “trolling” Britain with its Twitter account.

The London Embassy’s account, which has sometimes mirrored the wry humor of the ambassador, has been vocal in demanding evidence backing Britain’s insistence that Russia was behind the March 4 nerve agent attack on former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in the city of Salisbury.

One March post featured a picture of actor David Suchet as Hercule Poirot, the intrepid sleuth of Agatha Christie novels.

On March 18 the Russian Embassy tweeted: “In absence of evidence, we definitely need Poirot in Salisbury!”

Pressed on the tweets, Yakovenko said Thursday that “We are using in this situation a sense of human humor because some statements are really not friendly.”

___

4:30 p.m.

Russia’s top diplomat says Moscow must participate in a probe into the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in Britain and see evidence if it is to accept the probe’s results.

Britain blamed Russia for the March 4 poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, accusations Russia has denied.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Britain stonewalled Moscow’s request for evidence and refused to let Russia join the probe.

Asked Thursday if Russia would accept the conclusions of the international chemical weapons watchdog, Lavrov said Moscow can’t give an advance approval to a verdict coming after a secret investigation to which it had no access.

Lavrov said that the expulsions of over 150 Russian diplomats by two dozen Western nations threatened global stability. Moscow expelled the same number of Western diplomats.

___

4:15 p.m.

The poisoned daughter of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal says in a statement released by police that her strength is growing daily and that she is grateful for the interest shown in her case.

Yulia Skripal said Thursday that she woke up over a week ago after being poisoned along with her father in the southwestern city of Salisbury on March 4. The 33-year-old expressed gratitude to the people who came to their aid.

She says that “I am sure you appreciate that the entire episode is somewhat disorientating, and I hope that you’ll respect my privacy and that of my family during the period of my convalescence.”

Britain has blamed Russia for the poisoning using a military grade nerve agent. In response, more than two dozen Western allies including Britain, the U.S. and NATO have ordered out over 150 Russian diplomats in a show of solidarity.

___

3:45 p.m.

Russian state television has released a recording of what it says is a phone call between the daughter of an ex-spy poisoned in Britain and her cousin in Russia.

In it, Yulia Skripal says she and her father, former double agent Sergei Skripal, are both recovering and in normal health. She says her father is sleeping and his health has not been irreparably damaged.

Rossiya TV says Skripal’s niece, Viktoria, who lives in Moscow, provided it with the recording of her conversation with Yulia. The broadcaster says it can’t verify the recording’s authenticity.

Britain has blamed Russia for the March 4 nerve agent attack that sickened the Skripals. The British hospital treating them said Yulia’s condition has improved, while her father has remained in critical condition. Russia has vehemently denied involvement in the poisoning.

___

11 a.m.

Russia’s top diplomat has dismissed the recent expulsions of Russian diplomats as a mockery of international law.

Two dozen countries have kicked out a total of more than 150 Russian diplomats in a show of solidarity with Britain, which blames Russia for last month’s poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday the nerve agent poisoning of Sergei Skripal was “staged” to justify the expulsions from many countries “whose arms were twisted.”

The international chemical weapons watchdog on Wednesday rejected Russia’s calls for a joint investigation with Britain. Russia said the number of countries that abstained from the vote suggested many have doubts about Britain’s allegations that Moscow was behind the attack.

Hungary to continue blocking NATO-Ukraine Commission

Szijjarto claims Ukraine made no progress on the issue of the education law and failed to implement the recommendations of the Venice Commission.

Hungary will continue to block the NATO-Ukraine Commission at the ministerial level, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told his Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Klimkin during their talks held on the sidelines of the EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg.

In addition, Szijjarto said that Ukraine had failed to make any progress on the law on education and to implement the recommendations of the Venice Commission, reports Deutsche Welle.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister also expressed discontent over the recent petition to regulate the status of Ukrainian citizens with dual EU citizenship, as well as including a number of Hungarian citizens, including Szijjarto himself, in the Myrotvorets database of individuals threatening Ukraine’s national security.

Both officials noted that while the conflict between the two countries has not been resolved, some significant progress is seen.

“We need to find a path of how we could find a common language with Hungary. This is a difficult path,” said Pavlo Klimkin.

According to Szijjarto, he would also like to “strengthen and improve relations.”

During the meeting of Hungarian and Ukrainian foreign ministers, the two top diplomats decided to hold consular consultations on the issue of Hungarian passports issued to Ukrainian nationals in Zakarpattia and finally agreed to have the name of the office of an envoy for the development of the Transcarpathian region changed.

Open Letter
To DOJ, for Mr. Mueller
I respectfully recommend to Mr. Mueller to interview, depose, subpoena, or to interrogate Sergei Skripal as the part of his investigation. It looks like he might be one of the main masterminds and the culprits of the Operation Trump.
I also respectfully advise that Mr. Skripal may be overtly or covertly mentally ill.
It appears that his motivations were to reunite Ukraine and Russia and to restore the USSR via the re-installation of the Yanukovich regime. His web of connections has to be explored. It appears also that he might be the main author or one of the authors of “Steel dossier”. It also looks like he signals that he might have more materials of this kind in his posession, which he intends to use to establish the “TLConnections in the right places”.
It is also quite possible that he was the main organizer and inspiration behind the capture of Crimea and the War in Donbass, which he apparently intended to offer to Russia in exchange for assistance in re-installing Yanukivich. For Russians the Donbass was not worth the global outcry and the economic blockade, so they did not make a deal. Yanukovich probably, did not want to sacrifice Donbass for his return eihther, so this plan came to naught.

“The amazing “coincidenceOn March 2, 2018, Friday: Yanukovych Calls For Direct Talks Between Kyiv, Separatists.

The same day March 2, 2018, the “Russian team”: “Boshirov, Petrov, Fedotov”  arrive from Moscow just for 2-3 days. On March 3, Skripal’s daughter arrived.

It is possible that the team brought the message directly from Yanukovych and/or others confirming that the separatist war in Donbass is over

Hypothetically, Skripal got hysterical and staged his own and his daughters’s poisoning, sending the message back: “YOU POISONED ME!”

I think that the information that could be obtained from Skripal holds the keys to many answers. I think that he has to be very carefully investigated. One of the most intriguing quiestions are his connections with the “New Abwehr”. Please see my blogs for more details.
I think that to interview Yanukovych, and the related and significant others, is also a very good idea.
Sincerely, Michael Novakhov

Brett Kavanaugh isn’t an electoral boon for Republicans after all.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Chief of Staff John Kelly sat down with New York ’s Olivia Nuzzi to do a very normal thing: explain, over and over again, that the White House is not a circus . “ We have a very smooth-running organization even though it’s never reported that way. So the real story is that. It’s really the real st

My Hypothesis: “Boshirov-Chepiga – Petrov-Mishkin” were not the poisoners but the contacts for Skripal. They picked up and delivered the digital microfilms or “wirelessly” from the previously arranged dead drops (in cathedrals or public squares, for example).

This is further illustrated by their “near meeting” in Prague in 2014 reported by the “Gazeta.ru”, copy below

The physician was probably supplied to deal with the risks of the dead drop been booby trapped.

This pair (not couple, no such luck for them) apparently specialized in handling the dead drops throughout their extensive travels “in search of the sport nutritional supplements” in Ukraine, Russia, and globally. It looks like they were working for Skripal, and possibly for Yanukovych, and possibly for the range of some other interested parties which have to be elucidated, which is essential.

Mr. Putin, I think it would be a good idea to put some good questions to these nice guys; and I also think that a joint British-Russian investigative team would be well positioned to put some questions to them, to Mr. Skripal, and possibly to the other parties involved. I think that this step might be, hopefully, the way for the solution and possibly, for the resolution of this situation.

What do you think?

What do you think, Ms. May, Dear Madam Prime Minister?

I read the reports that this option was proposed by the Russians but was declined by the British side, but I am not sure if that happened.

I think that the Joint British-Russian Investigative Committee might be helpful.

The still hypothetical at this point the “double or true identities” issues of “Boshirov” and “Petrov”, and their functions should also be clarified. The “identifier” Bellingcat based their conclusions mostly on the leaks, not on any “scientific ways” of doing it (which is a phony-baloney, I have no problems repeating this statement); and these might have been the leaks from Skripal himself and the significant others, such as the New Abwehr in its multiple sources.

The general issue of the WMD-s is the elephant in this room lurking from the every corner.

The Chepiga Bakhtin connection (they are “close friends”, the press found out), is also the most interesting subject.

Drawbacks[edit]

While the dead drop method is useful in preventing the instantaneous capture of either an operative/handler pair or an entire espionage network, it is not without disadvantages. If one of the operatives is compromised, they may reveal the location and signal for that specific dead drop. Counterintelligence can then use the dead drop as a double agent for a variety of purposes, such as to feed misinformation to the enemy or to identify other operative using it

or ultimately to booby trap it.

Modern techniques[edit]

On January 23, 2006, the Russian FSB accused Britain of using wireless dead drops concealed inside hollowed-out rocks to collect espionage information from agents in Russia. According to the Russian authorities, the agent delivering information would approach the rock and transmit data wirelessly into it from a hand-held device, and later his British handlers would pick up the stored data by similar means.[2]

dead drop or dead letter box is a method of espionage tradecraft used to pass items or information between two individuals (e.g., a case officer and an agent, or two agents) using a secret location, thus not requiring them to meet directly and thereby maintaining operational security. The method stands in contrast to the live drop, so-called because two persons meet to exchange items or information.
